The Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences was organized in 1978 on the basis of the Biological Department of the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy that was founded in 1958. Since 2006, the head of the Institute is Sergey Kostrov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The Institute focuses on basic and applied research in the areas of molecular genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology and medicine.

- Studies of the molecular mechanisms of genetic regulation in various model systems;

- Development of physiologically active compounds, including isotopically-labeled substances, for studies in molecular biology, molecular genetics and medicine;
- Bioinformatics and systems biology analysis of molecular genetic processes.
